The following are the members of the advisory board for CapitalWorks. Each is independent of CapitalWorks.

James W. Brown III

James W. Brown

Mr. Brown is President of Tailwind Technologies, a position he has held since 2008. Tailwind Technologies is the holding company for Hartzell Propeller and Hartzell Engine Technologies, aerospace and general aviation-related manufacturing businesses. From 1993 to 2007, Mr. Brown worked for Hartzell Propeller, Inc., in a variety of capacities including operations supervisor and director of the Hartzell Service Center, vice president of parts and service and co-president. He holds a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. He also received a law degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, graduating Magna Cum Laude and Order of the Coif.

Mr. Brown has been an active participant in the community. He has served as a board member and president of The Miami Valley School and The Piqua Community Foundation. He has also served as a board member of The Miami County YMCA, Mainstreet Piqua, The Overfield Early Childhood Program and Daybreak Dayton.

Michael R. Shaughnessy

Michael ShaughnessyMike Shaughnessy is the retired co-chairman and president of ColorMatrix. He and his business partner acquired full ownership of a small plastics colorant manufacturer joint venture that became ColorMatrix in 1985.

ColorMatrix is a manufacturer of liquid colorant dispersions for the thermoplastics industry headquartered in Berea, Ohio. Originally servicing the commodity injection molding business, the company introduced this technology into the rigid PVC extrusion market for pipe and siding. Later, through collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company, the business expanded into coloring PET resins for the global packaging industry.

In May 2006, Mike sold ColorMatrix to Audax at which time he became co-chairman until the sale of the business in December 2011. Previously, Mike was a manufacturer’s representative in the plastics industry for Chemiplast, a regional sales manager for Cincinnati Milacron Chemicals of Reading, Ohio and a sales representative for Mallinckrodt Chemical of St. Louis.

Mr. Shaughnessy currently serves on the advisory boards of three private equity funds and is an investor in those funds. He serves on several nonprofit boards including The Catholic Community Foundation, The Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Notre Dame College, Greater Cleveland Squash Association, and White North Stables.

John F. Turben

Jack TurbenIn 1977, Jack Turben founded the private equity firm, Chagrin Valley Company, the predecessor firm to Kirtland Capital Partners. He served as chairman of Kirtland Capital until he retired from the firm in 2011. Prior to 1977, Jack was director and chairman of the executive committee of Geneve Corporation and general partner and chairman of the executive committee of Prescott, Ball and Turben.

Jack earned his BA from Yale University in 1957 and served in the U.S. Army. In 1996, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Lake Erie College, and in 2004, he received the Dealmaker Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Association for Corporate Growth.

Currently, Jack serves as a member of the board of directors of the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET) and NACCO Industries, Inc. He is chairman of the advisory board of China Centric Associates. Jack also serves as a member of the board of trustees of Lake Erie College and University School, and has been Mayor of the Village of Kirtland Hills, Ohio, since 1994.

W. Nicholas Howley

Nicholas HowleyNick Howley is executive chairman of the board of directors of TransDigm Group Inc. (NYSE/TDG) and TransDigm Holdings. He was the original founder of TransDigm in 1992, now a New York Stock exchange listed company, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. The company owns and operates a broad range of aerospace manufacturing businesses.

Nick received his BS degree in Engineering from Drexel University and an MBA from Harvard University. He serves on the board of Polypore Corporation (NYSE, PPO) and Consolidated Precision Products (CPP). He also serves on non-profit boards of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Case Western Reserve University and as chairman of St. Martin de Porres High School.
